What Interviewing Has Done To Me

Interviewing has made me more patient and more careful. Before I started doing interviews, I thought good writing was mostly about having a strong opinion and saying it clearly. Interviewing showed me that writing gets way better when you stop guessing and start listening. When you hear someone explain their own experience, you pick up details you would never invent on your own. It also forces you to slow down and confirm what you think you heard, which is a big deal for accuracy.

It has also made me more confident because I have a method now. I know I can prepare questions, build a simple structure, and then let the person talk. I have learned that the best moments usually happen after the obvious questions are done. Follow up questions, silence, and asking for examples can bring out the real story. Interviewing has changed how I see people too. Everyone has reasons for what they do, and you cannot understand those reasons from a distance. It makes stories feel less like assignments and more like real conversations that deserve to be handled well.
