A Habit I Want To Build As a Writer

A habit I want to build is writing even when I do not feel ready. A lot of the time, I wait until I feel inspired or until I think I know exactly what to say. But that usually just turns into procrastination. I have noticed that clarity shows up after I start, not before. If I can get myself to write a rough first version, I can always fix it later. The hard part is starting, not finishing.

I also want to build the habit of collecting ideas in real time. When I hear a good quote, see a trend, or notice something weird on campus, I want to write it down right away. News writing and professional writing both reward people who pay attention. If I keep a running list of observations, questions, and possible angles, it will be easier to come up with story ideas and it will make my writing more specific. Specific writing feels more honest, and it usually connects better than general writing.
